Thanks Ginny for a very neat summary of the challenges and benefits of effective performance management. If it's any consolation, I don't know of any manager who would say they got it right all the time. I do know that managers and organisations who apply the 5 steps - and particularly those managers who have access to the tools and techniques they need to effectively manage performance - get it right more often than not. And, as you've said, the result is improved satisfaction - for the manager and the people they manage. Best wishes. Joan

Ah! Yes!
This always resonates. The thing that seems the least popular and easiest to leave until tomorrow, and yet the one thing that bites you in the bum if left alone for whatever reasen. If people are ok why bother them? If there are problems get in there! Not always right. My experience has been that being more measured works best.
Short term time consuming for longer term satisfaction all round.
I have found these issues to be fundamental and essential for me to pay attention to. The idea of letting people manage themselves is ok up to a point but people do need to know there is something/someone in place.
I wish I got it right all the time.
